This canary was first developed from imported Belgian Canary stock during the early 1800s. By the 1830s, a distinctly new variety had evolved by selection in Glasgow. The Scottish Canary is one of the ‘birds of position’ in contrast to the purely ‘type’ canaries, such as the Border Canary or the Yorkshire. The ideal was that from the tip of the beak to the tip of the tail, the form should be like the rim of a circle. Life Span: Scotch Fancy Canaries for sale can live between 8-12 years with proper care.

Size: 7 inches in length

Temperament: As a posture bird, they may feel a bit unsteady in an aviary that is too large or that contains competing species. Treat these birds like the rare gems they are. Most people will want to house one pair to a flight or breeder cage, in order to give them the best chance of success. A cage that is at least 24” wide by 18” deep by 24” high is recommended. You need to provide adequate perches, of varying widths to allow the bird to change its grip and prevent wear on the feet. You can include toys like bells and swings, although mirrors might cause undesirable behavior changes, like a refusal to sing. Scotch Fancy Canaries, like all canaries, must be protected from mosquitoes.

Song/ Call: The Scotch Fancy Canary, like many other types of canaries, does possess some singing talent. All males will stop singing during the molt, but a male who never sings at all may have a health problem that should be investigated.

Diet: The main component of the Scotch Fancy Canary diet is a high-quality canary seed.
